Hi! I'm Ashley Hutson, I am a born and raised Oklahoma girl! I teach 6th and 7th grade Social Studies in southern Oklahoma and obviously working on my M.Ed. I have also coached 7th and 8th grade girls track (sprinters) the last 2 years, although I will not continue that next school year. Obtaining my M.Ed allows me to make more money and if I ever decide to leave Oklahoma, would open my options. But for now, I am happy where I am!
Global Collaborator 7D: Local and Global issues wants students to explore local and global issues using collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions. Middle school students can select a topic featured in the daily CNN10 newscast—a 10-minute segment highlighting current events. Topics may include climate change, global conflicts, public health concerns, or technological developments. Students will have the opportunity to choose an issue that they personally connect with. In small groups, they’ll research the topic more deeply, explore its local and global impact, and collaborate on a project or presentation that highlights their findings, potential solutions, and how the issue relates to their lives as students. Tools like Google Slides or Canva can be used to create their final product. This assignment aligns with Oklahoma Grade 7: Content Standard 1.4, which encourages students to examine current events and issues, using inquiry and critical thinking to understand how these matters impact their communities and the world.
Triple E Framework: Engagement, Enhancement, Extension
This assignment follows Kolb’s Triple E Framework by focusing on Engagement, Enhancement, and Extension. Students are engaged because they get to pick CNN10 topics that interest them, like climate change or global issues, making learning more personal and motivating. Technology enhances their learning by helping them research, think critically, and create presentations using tools like Google Slides or Canva. Finally, the assignment extends learning by connecting classroom work to real-world problems, building important skills like teamwork, communication, and digital literacy.
Hi Ashley! Having your students analyze current issues in the media is a great way to bridge the gap between the classroom and the outside world. It would also help with engagement that they probably already hear the content in their own lives whether it be from family, the news, or other sources. This also teaches them about how they fit into the bigger picture with adding how it impacts themselves.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea that you have for small groups. Having students research a topic deeply and exploring its local and global impact on the world around them. Then to have students collaborate on a project about their findings, solutions, and how the issue relates to their lives as students is such a great idea for the grade level students. Great job!
